As City Engineers we specialize in the following:

  • Plan, monitor and control the design and conduct of complex and large-scale Public Works engineering studies and projects.
  • Utilize staff from within the City or outside consultants as necessary.
  • Develop timelines, specifications, cost estimates and project objectives.
  • Monitor progress and provide periodic reports regarding assigned projects.
  • Coordinate and conduct pre-construction meetings.
  • Perform contract administration, including the inspection of work in progress and upon completion to assure compliance with timelines, contracts and City, State and federal specifications and regulations.
  • Approve and sign for release of service contract payments.
  • Prepare annual recommended operating budgets.
  • Monitor, approve and control expenditures and budgets prepare State and inter-departmental billings for completed construction.
  • Prepare State and federal grant applications design work and contract specifications.
  • Prepare and conduct formal presentations for obtaining construction funds.
  • Develop specifications and cost estimates for bids on major projects requiring outside consulting assistance.
  • Participate in the selection of consultants.
  • Negotiate and monitor contracts and services of outside firms. Review complex architectural and engineering plans and drawings for major construction projects.
  • Within the City to assure compliance with City ordinances and policies.
  • Approve plans or indicate deficiencies with corrective action guidelines.
  • Approve payments to contractors on major projects as appropriate and submit to superiors for final authorization according to established procedures.
  • Schedule, assign or provide work direction to other engineering personnel on City projects, engineering plan design, calculations, cost estimations and other engineering duties as appropriate.
  • Provide project leadership as assigned on projects requiring City personnel.
  • Establish and maintain project schedules and activities.
  • Provide written and verbal and special reports as necessary on assigned projects and contracts.
  • Conduct research and prepare construction recommendations on Public Works projects.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive reports to outside groups, City Council, commissions or others as requested.
  • Maintain records for assigned activities.
  • Confer with City officials, contractors, consulting engineers and the general public regarding Public Works and engineering issues and projects.
  • Assist, advise and direct the general public on construction practices and code requirements.
  • Assist local citizens in the establishment, implementation and completion of Local Improvement Districts (LIDs), including attending public meetings, reviewing cost estimates and coordinating preliminary and final LID assessment rolls.
  • Meet with City personnel as necessary on capital construction, transportation, utility projects and studies to assure needs are being met by proposed designs and specifications.
  • Assure proper communication at key intervals between consultants, contractors, department heads and others.
  • Make complex calculations involving assigned engineering specialty, including utilities, construction, transportation and others.
  • Review calculations and designs of others to assure conformance with City engineering standards.
  • Communicate with citizens on a variety of issues.
  • Respond to complaints or questions and attempt to resolve or direct the individual to the appropriate individual to achieve a speedy resolution.
  • Develop and propose new City specifications and ordinances and change standard details.
  • Read and remain current on State and federal specifications and regulations to perform field and office engineering duties.
  • Operate a variety of engineering equipment, including drafting equipment, computer-aid drafting equipment, planimeter, survey equipment, blueprint machine and photography equipment.
